Nuestra Señora del Carmen Mill from Frigiliana, owned by the company De la Torre S.A., boasts of being the only active cane molasses factory in Europe, after the Azucarera Guadalfeo, in Salobreña (Granada) closed its doors definitively in 2006. The Axárquica town thus keeps alive an agricultural and industrial tradition that the Arabs introduced more than eleven centuries ago, with the manufacture of the so-called 'black honey' (filtered and cooked sugar cane juice), and that after the splendor of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th, with dozens of sugar mills spread all over the coast of Malaga, it began to disappear around the 1960s.
